Tips to Getting on a Committee
1. Complete the volunteer application located on the SCOV website
a. Be specific on your reason for applying. Why does this committee interest you?
b. List your relevant experience both in your professional life and in your time here at SCOV and how it relates to the committee’s function and purpose.
c. Be selective as to which committee/s you are targeting. We all have preferences. If you list all the committees, your application may be overlooked by a committee that you would be perfect for simply because you weren’t specific enough as to what your interests are.
d. If it has been a while since you completed your form, do it again. If your application is several months old, submit a new one with updated information.
e. Since most committees are populated after the chairs are appointed, it’s best to submit your application in April or May.
2. Attend the Committee meetings
a. Listen and Ask questions.
b. Give constructive comments where and when appropriate.
c. Be respectful. No one expects the committee members to agree on everything as we are all individuals with different perspectives, but committee members need to work together and how we resolve differing opinions is important for a productive committee.
d. Introduce yourself to the Committee Chair. They may not be the Chair in the next year, but may make some recommendations to the new Chair as to who would be a great addition to the committee.
e. If you know someone on the committee, let them know that you are interested in serving when a vacancy occurs.
