Special Vote to Purchase the Copper Center (CC)

For several years SCOV has investigated any option to expand the space we have available to us to accommodate the expanding wants of our residents. A task force investigated the purchase of the shopping center located at Rancho Vistoso and Sun City Blvd, but the attempt was unsuccessful as the seller did not want to sell the property.

SCOV’s challenge was to find more space in an area within our original footprint.

The Copper Health building became available for purchase in late 2022 and was located within our community’s original footprint.

The SCOV Board and Administration investigated buying it, which required resident approval of a special initiative on the 2023 ballot.

The PURCHASE of the CC would be made without increasing dues or a Special Assessment. Voting households approved the purchase by a 2-1 margin. Information was provided prior to the vote that projected renovations were estimated at approximately $2.7M. The renovations would accommodate a number of studios and activities moving from the Artisan Center, Welcome Center, Golf Cart Barn and Catalina Vista. Some residents who were originally opposed to the purchase, developed a petition, in accordance with our bylaws, to have another initiative on the 2024 ballot to keep, or force the sale of the CC. Again, this measure to keep the Copper Center was overwhelmingly approved by voting households by a 2-1 margin. The Copper Center Task Force was formed. They interviewed all potential users of the CC and formulated and drafted a floor plan for the building. It has since gone to an architect to submit drawings to the Town of OV for permitting and obtaining a Certificate of Occupancy. Most residents of SCOV look to the future development of the CC, whether it is next year or longer.
